Model D: $2.3M artist learning center opens on 7 Mile. We keep talking about how a vibrant arts community is essential for a vibrant economy, so this sounds like good news for Detroit:
Yesterday, the Arab American and Chaldean Councilcelebrated the grand opening of its Artisana and Adult Learning Center located at 55 W. Seven Mile, between Woodward and John R. The $2.3 million building joins three others built in the last decade: the agency’s Detroit headquarters, a youth center and a club house for a total of a $14 million investment into their stretch of street. Construction began a year ago on the building, which features a first floor gallery and a Middle Eastern-themed café. There is also work space for artists that will encourage interaction between different ethnicities and social and economic backgrounds. “As they do work side by side, they will learn from each other, learn about each other’s backgrounds,” says ACC executive director Isa Hasan. School field trips will also allow students to interact with these same artists as they work.
Capital Gains: Lansing Lands Largest Solar Cell Array in Michigan for $600,000. Clean, green renewable energy has the potential to create thousands of jobs and help diversify our economy here in Michigan, so it’s great to see news like this:
The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) now boasts the state’s largest solar cell array. The BWL is putting 432 solar panels behind the Stadium District development in Downtown Lansing.
“We are making energy history in the State of Michigan,” says BWL’s general manager, Peter Lark. “Not only is the BWL building Michigan’s largest solar project, we are underscoring our state leadership role in acquiring clean, renewable energy.”
The panels will capture enough energy to bring electricity to 50 homes.
Capital Gains: New 3,000 Sq Ft Williamston Fitness Studio Shares Dance Space. We didn’t have anything to do with this project, but after making a loan to the Williamston Theatre, it’s nice to see that the downtown area is attracting new small businesses:
Williamston residents are taking advantage of a few new downtown fitness options, favoring them over the drive into East Lansing or Lansing for a fitness class.
Amie Brown recently opened Body Works Fitness in the Keller Plaza at 110 E. Grand River Avenue. She shares the 3,000 square foot space with a dance studio. Brown schedules her classes around the dance classes.
“I usually teach morning classes because it’s a dance studio at night,” she says.
Brown also teaches at the Michigan Athletic Club (MAC) in East Lansing. She hopes to keep adding instructors to her roster. She has roughly 15 to 20 clients.
